How to embed photos of work

Today I am going to show you how to embed photos of your work on Blogger. First, you need to take a picture of your work with an iPad.


Next, you are going to want to crop out the unimportant parts of the photo.


Next, upload the photo to Google Photos album called Portfolio pictures. 

Now, on your laptop, open Blogger and go to the icon of the landscape picture.


You will see a menu of options

Go to the option Google Album Archive and search for the Portfolio picture album. Select your photo and it will be inserted!

How to Upload Your Work to Blogger

It is now time to upload your wonderful work to your ePortfolio! First, you have to figure out: is your work in Google Drive or on paper? That will affect how you get your work into your post!

1) Google Drive

First, you need to locate your work in Google Drive. Make sure it is completed!
Then go to the File menu and located the Publish to the Web option

Next, you copy the embed code and paste it in HTML version of the blog post.

Investigations into Motion & Energy

We are going to begin our experiments as scientists do: by asking questions! Let's watch this video, and record as a class: What do you notice? What do you wonder?




Our questions:
What are they?
Are they magnets? 
Is some one controlling them? Did they add anything? Did some one push them?
What makes them let go from the wood? Why is there a piece of wood?
Is the string bouncey/strong or weak?
Why did they change directions when they started? How do they change directions?
Why did they change patterns?
Why did the gaps get bigger?
Does it have to do with friction?
What kind of force does it have?
Do they weigh the same? Is the balls heavy or light or the same?

We then identified three variables to test: mass of object (example, a bowling ball vs a tennis ball), the release position (90 degree vs 45 degree) and the length of the string. We made predictions as to what impacted the movement of the pendulum (or the number of swings). Ask 4HR to find out what our results were!

Claim - Evidence - Reason

The release position affected the motion of the pendulum (number of swings) - no data supports this claim.

The mass of the fob affected the motion of the pendulum (number of swings) - no data supports this claim.

The length of the string affected the motion of the pendulum (number of swings)
-If the string is longer,
-The shorter the string, the more swings the pendulum completes. For example, when the string is 20 cm long, it completes about 18 swings. When the string is 38 cm long, it completes about 12 swings. But when the string is 15 cm long, it completes 17 swings. This information doesn't support our claim. We need to complete more testing to be more sure.

Sketchnotes



A new note-taking craze is going on! Yes, a craze about note-taking. It is called Sketchnotes. On Twitter, people share their sketch notes to provide the main idea and important details of information texts. Today, and tomorrow, we are going to share the main idea and supporting details about a simple machine.

Materials: Reading notebook, Cornell note-taking structure, pencil, and 1 laptop per group
Either with words or sketches, record the main idea and supporting details about your simple machine. Read as many sources as you can!

Engineering Design Process

4HR will be tapping into our engineering expertise in this unit! Everyday we find solutions to ordinary problems. In this unit, we are going to help others by finding solutions to some extraordinary problems.

First, what steps do we need to take? Let's watch teams of engineers as they follow the design process.

Global Citizen



What do we already know about Global citizens?
-Being kind, aware of what you are doing

-Global means around the world, citizen is a person that lives in a place. Maybe it is what you can do for the whole world
-Different place but similar culture
-Know what's happening in your life.

How does knowing one another's culture help you as a global citizen?

As a culmination of our Social Studies unit, we are going to investigate how we have evolved as global citizens. First, we watched this video where people share their views on what it means to be a global citizen. We took notes in the form of words, phrases, or symbols. Lastly we compiled our individual notes into a class note-taking sheet.

Our last step is to write an essay about the question How does knowing one another's culture help you as a global citizen? Since it is an essay you need to have a claim, reasons, and supporting evidence.

Researching about Natural Resources

4HR is beginning our summative assessment for our Where you live impacts how you live unit. We will be sharing our learning about:

After choosing a natural resource to investigate, each student will use their Nonfiction reading skills to find important information. Here are our list of resources to use:

Building Our Own Seismograph

4HR is building seismographs that are affordable, accurate, and sensitive for countries that can't afford fancy computer seismographs. Our first step to collect information that will help us design accurate and sensitive machines.

Nonfiction Reading Strategies


Grade 4 has been working on developing our Nonfiction Reading Strategies. Our big foci have been word attack skills, interpreting visual information, determining main idea and detail, and merging information through synthesizing. 

We have been collecting ThinkMarks aligned with this rubric throughout our Nonfiction reading unit. Now we are going to create a video explaining our thinking about Nonfiction texts and our great strategies with the world.

Finding our Values

4HR is exploring beliefs, values, cultures, and traditions in our current Social Studies unit. We began by exploring what 4HR values. We found out that we really value:

Understanding     Learning    Respect     Care     Listening     Collaboration     Fun & Enjoyment

Next we looked at ourselves. We arranged these statements in order from most important to least important, and analyzed our responses to determine our individual values.

I try to understand what other people are feeling.
I am as important as everyone else.
Everyone else is equal to me but different from me.
I know what is fair and not fair. I try to do the right thing.
I look after the environment and don’t waste things.
I try to help others and not fight with them.
I have my own ideas but can alter them when I realize they were wrong.
I want to learn more about the world.
I think I can change things in the world.

A Day in the Life of an ISKL Student

To investigate how Where you live impacts how you live, 4HR watched documentaries about a day in the life of children in Thailand and Vietnam. But there was no documentary on Malaysia! We decided to make movies that show how the natural, capital and human resources of Kuala Lumpur affect our daily lives. Take a look!

Learning from a Physicist

Today 4HR spoke with Dr. Anthony Boyd via Skype. He is a physicist who works at a Naval Research Laboratory near Washington, DC. He talked with us about how he became a physicist, what his work day looks like, and answered our questions.


This is what we learned today:
- For a short time, we are stronger than gravity (lifting foot off ground)
- If there was no gravity, there would be no friction. The exception is in space when planets can rub against each other.
- If there is too much friction, we can't move.
- If there is no friction,  you would slide a lot.
- Friction always works in an opposite direction.
- There is a relationship between the moon and tides.
- Gravity is stronger than friction
- Gravity is an attractive force, so it pulls not pushes.
- We need to gravity to stay down.
- Even if the mass is different, in space objects falls at the same rate.
- You can fit more than 1,000 Earths inside Jupiter.
- There is only one kind of gravity. Sometimes it is safe, sometimes it is dangerous.
- People can't combine their strengths to push ourselves to space.
- Floods are connected to high tide and low tide.
- If there was no gravity, it would be hard to breathe because dust particles would stay in the air.
- We are pulling against the Earth, but since the Earth's mass is so much greater, the Earth pulls us.
- Momentum doesn't help us gain acceleration, but it does help us gain velocity.
- We need a lot of space to get out of the Earth's gravity.
- Distance affects gravity and mass affects gravity.
- When an object is falling, air resistance is pushing up against the object. When there is larger surface area, there is more air resistance.

Writing Blog Posts



Today 4HR is reading blog posts and deciding what makes a blog post excellent. We have read three exemplars and compared them. We asked ourselves What information should a blog post have? and What should a blog post look like? In groups, we recorded our ideas on post-its to share with the whole class. Then, we created a blog checklist to help bloggers always write excellent posts.

Soon 4HR will be blogging! It is important that we know what to include and what to avoid. Our purpose for blogging is to attract an audience and share information. If we write posts that are hard to read, understand, or look at, then our audience might not learn from the post. We take our blogging seriously!

In the future, help us by commenting on what we did well and what we can improve on! It takes helpful editors and peer revisers to make sure our blog posts are excellent.
