3) No shouting
4) Each card is worth 10 pounds (or 5kg) of each product
5) Don't be silly

Trade Ministers & Communications Ministers represent:

A reminder of the different jobs and their descriptions.

World Trade Fair Job Descriptions

Job
Responsibilities
President
You are a proud leader of your country.  You are responsible for making sure that the other presidents know all about your country.  You are also responsible for collecting information about country profiles from other presidents.

As you communicate with the other presidents consider the following:
  • What are your needs and wants as a country?
  • What are the products/ resources that the other countries need and want?
  • Are there any countries that you might be able to partner with in order to make a better product or sale?
Finance Minister
You are the money man.  You are responsible for setting prices on the products that your country will sell.  You will also help manage the money and the resources after the trade minister has returned from trading.

When you meet with the other finance ministers, you should pay attention to the following:
  • What countries have a lot of money to spend?
  • What countries have only a little money to spend?
  • How might the amount of each country affect the prices of your product?
Trade Minister
You are the trade master.  You will be trading at the trade fair with the communications manager at your side to help you make decisions and use convincing and fair language to make sales.

When you go to trade, you should think about:
  • What products are the most important to my country being successful? What are least important?
Communications Minister
You are the communications manager.  You will work with the other communications manager to discuss rules and guidelines for speaking with one another when trading.

When you go to make these rules with others, you should consider:
  • What kind of rules should we have to make sure communication happens smoothly?
  • What will be the consequences of not following the communication guidelines?
What do you think the agreements for communicating should be?

Weekly Update: May 14 - May 18, 2018

Language Arts

This week in reading, the children will be spending time identifying important events in the stories they are reading and adding them to a timeline to help track the story. In addition to the story timeline, the children will focus on historically accurate events that the author includes to add to a historical timeline as well.

Math

Now that the students understand the benchmark angels, they will continue working with the protractor. The students will be given various angles and will be using the protractor to measure the angles. Students will learn that the size of the angle does not change even if the length of the lines change. A fun way to practice measuring angles is to play Bunny and Angles.

Science/ Social Studies

We didn’t get as much done this week as we had hoped :) Next week, we will continue student’s reflecting on their google map of natural resources. We will also begin investigating vocabulary like: Needs and Wants, Consumers and Producers etc. This quizlet is a good resource for kids to practice learning the new vocabulary tied to the unit.

Language Arts

This week in writing, the students will be working on publishing their Earth change information books. This will include revising their writing to ensure they have used scientific vocabulary and a variety of evidence to teach their reader about their topic. In addition to their writing, each student will be adding text features to emphasize important information in their text.

Math

This week the students will be using manipulatives to show how decimals can be represented through the base-ten model to the hundredths. They will learn that the square is referred to as the whole or one unit, the rods become the tenths, and the unit cubes become hundredths. They will then have the opportunity to draw their own models that will represent given decimals and the equivalent fraction.

Spring Break Reading and International Bookclubs!

It is very rare that a title warrants an exclamation mark, but today it does! We have two ways to share digitally and globally about our reading.

The first is contributing to our class slideshow about where and what we were reading over Spring break. I am sure you are excited to hear that I finished Lincoln in the Bardo and what fun places I got to read it in over break.

The second opportunity is to join an international bookclub. Liv, a tween reading enthusiast, has started a Padlet bookclub for The Mysterious Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. Go to her padlet, read the instructions, and share your thinking with a world of reader.

Happy reading over break!

Separating ideas

Punctuation isn't just kind to your readers, it also helps you as the author. If we smash all our ideas into one, then we don't get to clearly get our ideas across. You get to choose how you want your ideas to read.

For example,

(no punctuation) Carmen longed for a friend to play with or someone to trust but there was no one she was close to in her new town why can't I walk down the street to Grandma's house like I used to Carmen wondered why did we have to move at all

Option 1:
Carmen longed for a friend to play with or someone to trust. There was no one she was close to in her new town. "Why can't I walk down the street to Grandma's house like I used to?" Carmen sighed. "Why did we have to move at all?"

Option 2:
Carmen longed for a friend to play with or someone to trust, but there was no one she was close to in her new town. "Why can't I walk down the street to Grandma's house like I used to? Why did we have to move at all?" Carmen sighed.

Option 3:
Carmen longed for a friend to play with or someone to trust. But there was no one she was close to in her new town and she couldn't walk down the street to Grandma's house like she used to. Carmen sighed, "Why did we have to move at all?"

Show Don't Tell About Our Vacations

What: Finding out my baby had gotten her second tooth

Setting: Airplane seat, by the window, sitting next to my husband, at the end of the day (9 pm)

What am I feeling - surprise, shock, amazement, tired from traveling

Looks like:
my body is slumped backwards, Lane is moving moving moving
my eyes were heavy, half open
laser-focus on keeping Lane entertained
wetness covered my knuckle, as Lane sucked my finger like a lollipop, and chewed on my finger like it was her favorite food
eyebrows raised
mouth dropped
trying to hold her still to see her mouth

Sounds like:
scraping on my knuckles, like a rake scratching the sidewalk
"What on earth?"
shouting to my husband in surprise, even though the other passengers were sleeping (oops!)

Thinking:
"Ow!"
"This wasn't here this morning!"
"This can't be!"
"Did she grow her tooth on this flight?"
"But she wasn't showing any signs of another tooth coming in!"
